Some of the best games I know and have glued myself on was Cannon Fodder!
You get ranks after you complete misson, nice military theme and of course, I get to shoot the animals when I am pissed ;)

Now I just neeed to get ti to work on XP :(

Have your tried something like DOSBox? I tried it before and it works perfectly on XP :)
You can even set the speed ratios.
